“Fake Sugar…recasts
Ditto as a versatile, pop-minded rock star who can still shake the
rafters with her voice when the moment calls for it.” – NPR Music
16 JUNE 2017 (Toronto, ON) – Beth Ditto’s debut solo album, Fake Sugar,
is out today and available everywhere via Virgin Records/Universal
Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. Last night, she performed the lead single, “Fire”, on The Late Late Show with James Corden. Her fervent performance gives fans a hint of what to expect from Ditto’s upcoming live shows.Produced by Jennifer Decilveo (Andra Day, Ryn Weaver), Fake Sugar has already received praise for its stomp and girl-group melodies, lyrical Southernisms, and garage-rock swagger, as noted in a recent feature in The New York Times. The components of the album, from the stomping force of “Ooh La La”, to the soaring vocals in “We Could Run”, create an album that Paste Magazine says, “feels like Ditto’s aural memoir…It bridges the gap between love and loss and taps into her Southern roots to create a record that fully encompasses the person she’s become.”
After the release of first single, “Fire” and its accompanying video, Ditto covered the digital issue of Vogue, as seen in the original short video, Beth Ditto Does Brighton Beach featuring “Oo La La”. The feature described the track as, “a propulsive minimalist bass line and bluesy chorus that sound like a dive bar after-hours; the anthemic ballad ‘We Could Run’ has a wistful grandiosity that recalls early Springsteen. The record sounds full of hope…”
