Impact Nations Heads to Typhoon Haiyan Disaster Area
Team to Deliver and Distribute Water Filters in
Most Severely Damaged Areas
Vancouver,
B.C. – Since the highest velocity winds ever recorded slammed into the
Philippines, the world has been stunned by the extreme devastation
caused by Super Typhoon Haiyan. As the death toll continues to mount,
dire reports have announced that nearly every water source in the region
is contaminated, mounting a most extreme challenge for the population.
International relief agency Impact Nations has mobilized to help meet the most immediate and critical need – access to safe drinking water.
On Sunday November 24, a small team from Impact Nations
will deploy directly into the area surrounding the hard-hit city of
Tacloban. Led by David Pearson, the head of water projects for the
organization, the team will distribute water filtration systems and
provide sanitation training to on-the-ground local teams throughout the
devastated region.
Over the past seven years, Impact Nations
has been honored to work alongside local citizens to bring clean water
to over 150,000 people in countries such as Nicaragua, Haiti, Uganda,
Kenya and the Philippines. Now, using the same Sawyer Point One
technology, each water filter unit distributed will provide up to 500 US
gallons of water each day, not only in this desperate immediate time,
but for years to come.
“In every community where Impact Nations
has installed these water filters there has been a dramatic and
sustained improvement in people’s health,” explains Steve Stewart,
founder of Impact Nations. “Even after the typhoon damage is
repaired, each filter will continue to provide the people of the
Philippines safe, clean water for many years to come.”
The
cost of installing each filter (with containers for collecting water
reserves) is $65. Typically, each filter can give 25 people clean water
for their lifetime. In this most extreme situation, over a hundred
people can receive immediate relief daily from each filter.
